Censys Credits
Censys Credits enable Free and Starter users to search, explore data, and use Censys Platform functionality in the UI and via API.
Core and Enterprise customers have access to unlimited queries, asset lookups, and other actions in the Platform UI. Their actions in the web app do not count against their credit balance. However, credits are used for managing Core and Enterprise organization API usage.
Censys Credits for Free and Starter users
When you search and interact with data in the Platform, each action you perform costs a fixed number of credits. For example, each of the actions listed below consume credits.
- Searching across hosts, certificates, and web properties
- Looking up a host, certificate, or web property asset by directly navigating to its details page
- Opening a new page of search results
Every Free and Starter user receives 100 credits per month for free. Unused credits expire at the end of each month. Free accounts provide access to basic protocols and services for search and exploration.
Free users can purchase credits directly from the Platform web app to perform additional actions and access more data. When a Free user purchases any amount of credits, they are moved to the Starter tier. Purchased credits are valid for 12 months.
Upgrading from the Free to Starter tier unlocks access to advanced features that enable you to run more queries, incorporate regular expression (regex) into your queries, access the API, access a broader range of data, search against more properties, and more.
Credit consumption
Below is a partial list of actions that consume credits and their attendant costs for Free and Starter users.
Search queries and credit consumption
When you execute a search in the Platform web app or API, it consumes credits. Reference the table below for more information.
Action | Credit cost | Notes |
---|---|---|
Entity lookup | 1 | A lookup can be conducted by directly inputting its ID in the search bar, such as 8.8.8.8 for a host or a certificate's fingerprint (the value contained in cert.fingerprint_sha256 ). Clicking and viewing a host, certificate, or web property record returned by a search within the UI is also considered an entity lookup. |
Standard query | 5 | Any query that does not use regex is a Standard query. |
Advanced query | 8 | Any query that incorporates regex. |
Additional actions that consume credits
There are additional actions you can perform in the Platform that will consume credits. The table below represents a partial list of actions that consume credits:
Action | Credit cost | Notes |
---|---|---|
Loading an additional page of search results in the UI or retrieving another page of results via API | 5 or 8 | The cost for loading an additional page of results depends on whether the original search query was Standard or Advanced. |
Adding filters to results in the UI | 5 or 8 | The cost for adding filters (such as asset type, protocol, port, location, software product, or application) via the left sidebar on search results pages varies depending on whether the original query was Standard or Advanced. Adding a filter is effectively running another query. |
Running a report in the UI or using the aggregate API endpoint | 5 or 8 | Varies depending on the cost of the original query. |
Credit depletion
Free users who use all of their monthly credits, access to credit-consuming functionality will be restricted until the next monthly credit allocation or additional credits are purchased.
Starter users who use all of their credits cannot use the basic functionalities of the Platform until they purchase additional credits or switch to their Free account.
Credits and collections
There is no additional credit cost for creating and maintaining collections. However, performing actions within collections, such as running queries or generating reports, costs the amount of credits indicated above.
Censys Credits for Core and Enterprise users
Core and Enterprise customers may perform an unlimited number of queries, entity lookups, and other actions in the Platform UI. Their actions in the web app do not count against their credit balance.
All API actions taken by Core and Enterprise users cost 1 credit. There is no difference in cost between Standard and Advanced queries. Every additional page of 25 search results obtained via API costs 1 additional credit.
Core and Enterprise customers may purchase additional credit packs as needed. Contact your Censys representative to purchase additional credits.
